Term 1 - Weeks 7 - 9

Hi Rūma Weka Whanāu,
I hope everyone is taking care of themselves. Apologies that there hasn't been a blog out for awhile as I have been off sick but I hope you enjoy a couple of pictures I have from recent weeks.
Take care
Sharon

Rūma Weka Learning Site Link

Mōrena Everyone,

Our Learning Site is still a work in progress but you can find some links on the 'Home Learning Links' page that are great for extended learning at home. I am planning to add some non-digital ideas soon as well.
Have a great day!

Term 1 - Week 3: Our Learning Goals

 Hi Everyone!

The tamariki in Rūma Weka have had a great start to Week 3 of Term 1. This week the students will be working on the following learning goals, as well as creating their own self-portraits to display proudly in the classroom (and much more).

Reading: We are learning to re-tell a story in our own words

  • Everyone has been working hard to recall the sequence of events that occur in the classic story 'Jack and the Beanstalk', before retelling the story to their talking partner in their own words (which has been great oral language practice).
  • We have also been practicing our 'think-pair-share' routines this week and the students are quickly adapting to this activity. First students think of their own ideas, share them with their talking partner and then to the class. This activity has been great for ensuring that everyone has a chance to engage and that those who still feel too shy to raise their hands don't miss out.
  • We also began a strategy this week from the book 'The Reading Book' by Louise Dempsey and Sheena Cameron that encourages students to consider what characters in a book may be thinking at certain points throughout the story. For example, in 'Jack and the Beanstalk' the students discussed what Jack might be thinking as he climbed the beanstalk. This is a fun and educational activity that can be done at home also.
Maths: We are learning to order numbers from 0 - 100/0-1000 from smallest to biggest

  • Everyone has been challenging themselves with their Maths so far this week. This learning intention links with number knowledge which is an essential part of our mathematical understanding. We will continue to build on our knowledge in the upcoming weeks. Here's a fun game that can be played at home to support this learning: Player one rolls a dice two times and records the numbers that are shown (in order).  Player two then repeats this process. The student must then say which number is the smallest and which is the biggest. Whoever has the biggest number scores a point. To add further challenge, roll the dice three times (or more) to create bigger numbers. Tamariki can also be prompted to say how many more the biggest number is from the smallest.
Writing: We are learning to use describing words (adjectives) in our writing

  • This week we have been focusing on adjectives and how to use them in a story to provide interest and excitement. We talked about the five senses and describing how something looks, sounds, feels, tastes and smells. This encouraged everyone to think more deeply about the kinds of words that we use in the English language to describe different things. We plan to go outside and explore our school later in the week to think about how we could describe the sights and sounds etc. that we find along the way.
